Seattle and the Pacific Northwest is one of the most spectacular locations in the world. Australians have compared Seattle to a combination of Melbourne and Sydney. Personally I find there to be many similarities between Seattle and Sydney, especially as a waterfront environment. With the proximity of the Olympic Mountains to the west, the Cascade mountains to the east, and Mount Rainier to the southeast you have one of the most scenic cities in the world.
The greater Seattle area consists of two basic areas, Seattle and the Eastside. These two areas are separated by Lake Washington with Mercer Island in the middle. While Seattle is well known the Eastside is the faster growing business area which includes the cities of Bellevue and Redmond.

Unlike Australia the United States relies on local taxes, not a national GST. Generally, in the Seattle area the sales tax is 8.8%. Not everything is taxed, most items in a grocery store are not taxable. Unfortunately, like most US cities tourists are hit with extra taxes. Lodging and rental cars have extra taxes that pay for various items (specifically the two sports stadiums). Don't be surprised to see well over 10% taxation on your hotel, meals and rental car. Be careful with your budget to allocate for this.
Be cautious in heading to Canada. Despite the fact we are close neighbors it is still a foreign country and a passport is required. Be careful of your travel visa stay requirements. Just because you go to Canada does not mean the clock stops on your visa duration in the US. Many people have been caught up in this with dire consequences. If in doubt check with an Australian Consulate.
